TRAYNOR AMP REPAIR |

Vintage Traynor amps: These are really great amps, hugely undervalued and overlooked. Top construction with good quality parts, having a loud & clean sound somewhere between Blackface Fender and the cleaner side of a Marshall. Unique tone stages in the heads and great reverb in combos are notable qualities. As most amps of this age a complete replacement of filter caps is always advised as well as a check for overheated plate supply resistors. I usually replace the tone caps in these amps with Mallory 150's as they warm the sound up a bit from the usual orange drops or blue epoxy caps these came through with. They are also a good platform for some creative circuit work as there is not much collector value to damage if modified. The El-84 based combo units can easily go towards a Fender Deluxe sound, and I have turned a few into nasty little Vox AC-30 / Marshall 18W mongrels that really sounded great. Again, nice amps, very good value. In the early70's a Freeport, NY music store sold tons of these amps and they turn up fairly often in the Long Island area. If you spot one, snap it up, you will have a nice amp. Recently the Traynor line has been brought back with some very high quality combo amps, much better made than the equivalent Fender models at less cost. If tone means more than brand name mojo to you, these are definitely worth a try. I have recently tried out the YCS50 head and combo amps an they really sound great and seem to be built to a real high standard, but I have not opened one up and looked inside yet.
